TE Wire & Cable LLC

About TE Wire & Cable LLC

TE Wire & Cable LLC, a Marmon Wire & Cable/Berkshire Hathaway Company, is a premier Thermocouple and Specialty wire and cable manufacturer that was formed from the Wire and Cable Division of the Thermo Electric Corporation. The Operations for the manufacture of wire and cable have been in existence for more than 65 years, having been started to provide high quality wire to the thermo-sensing and temperature measurement markets in 1941. TE Wire & Cable LLC manufactures a full line of thermocouple wire and cable, from iron and nickel-based alloys, and copper instrument and control cable. TE Wire & Cable maintains an in-house laboratory directly certified by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), allowing it to calibrate its own wire which in turns provides a higher quality product with lower cost and improved efficiency. TE Wire & Cable is highly regarded as the industry leader and has developed a well founded reputation for providing high-quality temperature measurement wire & cable products with short lead times and competitive prices.

Calibration Capabilities

Temperature is the most frequently measured process signal and the accuracy of the temperature measured is critical to the end product quality and cost. For this reason TE Wire & Cable LLC maintains the industry's best equipped and most accurate temperature Calibration Laboratory. Our laboratory standards are directly calibrated by and traceable to NIST, the National Institute for Science and Technology in Gaithersburg, Maryland. We also participate in round-robin calibration events to British and Dutch national standards. Having our Calibration Laboratory accuracy tested against three different countries' national standard laboratories gives independent verification to our customers of the most accurate temperature signal available for their process. All of our thermocouple wire is carefully calibrated, selected, and matched to meet or exceed ASTM, ANSI, or IEC initial calibration tolerance specifications. Calibration temperature capabilities include cryogenic -320F (-196C) and at any point in a range from a low temperature of -110F (-79C) thru an upper temperature of 2400F (1316C). TE Wire & Cable's Calibration Laboratory is ISO9001-2000 certified and will earn ISO17025 in 2008. It conforms to MIL STD 45662A, ANSI/NCSL-Z540, AMS2750, ASTM E220, ISO/IEC Guide 25, ASTM E207 and others. Products can be supplied to meet BAC5621, ANSI MC 96.1 and other customer unique accuracy requirements.

History

Fred Walter, an aeronautics engineer, founded Thermo Electric Co. in 1941 to produce a thermocouple sensor for the aircraft industry. Its mission was to become a leading manufacturer of high quality thermocouple sensors. Its first significant customer was Curtis Wright, the airplane parts manufacturer. The company manufactured sensors for them through the war years and prospered as the demand for planes grew dramatically. The company struggled to keep up with demand in part because they were unable to buy the wire they required. Thermocouple sensors require a very high quality, accurately calibrated wire. The company concluded that by developing its own wire manufacturing facility it would be able to control the wire quality, resulting in more control over the quality of the company's final product. The goal was to provide the sensor division with a significant competitive advantage. As a result, in the 1940's the company started to develop its wire manufacturing business. In the 1960's Thermo Electric Co. started to manufacture sensors for power plants and petrochemical plants, in addition to serving the aircraft industry. As the sensor business grew and diversified into servicing new industries, the wire and cable division grew in size and scope with it.

In 1967 the wire and cable business was split from the sensor business and made into an independently managed division. The wire and cable division developed into a prosperous business unit of the parent company, and in the 1980's Thermo expanded the product line. Management increased the range of thermocouple wire sold and developed new technologies to meet the demands of the various industries that the company served. The Company began to gain a reputation for manufacturing the highest quality and the most accurately calibrated wire in the industry.

Thermo Electric Co. Inc. sold the Wire & Cable Division and in March 1999 an independent buyout group bought the division through Thermo Electric Wire & Cable, LLC. In 2007 the Marmon Group, seeing an opportunity to enhance its extensive businesses, including it many holdings in the wire and cable business, purchased 100% ownership of the company and renamed it TE Wire & Cable LLC.

In 2008 the Marmon Group and TE Wire & Cable LLC became part of the Berkshire Hathaway group of companies.
