Serbia and Montenegro

The Republics of Serbia and Montenegro were formed as a result of the dissolution of Yugoslavia and occurred on March 14, 2002. These countries are found in Eastern Europe, and are most famous for the upheavals and ethnic cleansing issues that brought United Nations troops to the area during the mid 1990's. These two republics split ways in June 2006 after only a few short years together. There are several interesting facts about the area, and five of the most known and uncommon ones are listed below.

5 Facts You Might Not Know

1
Yugoslavia was founded in 1945, and this country was home to Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia-Hercegovina and Macedonia. The country fell apart and succumbed to a number of ethnic battles during the 1990's under the leader Slobodan Milosevic. NATO conducted air strikes in Kosovo and Serbia in 1999, and this caused a mass exodus of ethnic factions.

These countries are predominantly Christian, and there are over 10 million people that live in the area. Belgrade is the largest city in the area, and it is home to more than 1 million citizens.

4
Serbia was beaten by the Ottoman Empire at the Battle of Kosovo in 1389, and the country was absorbed into this Empire. Serbia struggled under Turkish rule until the 19th century, and it declared independence in 1878 after Russia defeated the Turks in the Russo Turkish War.
5
Serbia is also famous for the spark that started the First World War. A Serbian nationalist was responsible for the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914, and this led to the declaration of war against Serbia by Austria. This quickly escalated into a continent wide conflict which became World War I.
