Six Key Metrics for Quality Improvement

These six key metrics are essential for measuring and improving product quality, process efficiency, and manufacturing performance.



1. Quality Rate (QR)
Definition: 
The percentage of products meeting quality standards compared to the total products produced.

Formula: 
QR = (Number of Good Units / Total Units Produced) × 100

Purpose:
- Measures the overall quality of production.
- Helps track improvements in defect reduction.



2. Defects Per Million Opportunities (DPMO)
Definition: 
The number of defects per million opportunities.

Formula: 
DPMO = (Defects / Opportunities) × 1,000,000

Purpose:

- Identifies defect rates and process improvement areas.



3. Rework Percentage
Definition: 
The percentage of total units produced that require rework.

Formula: 
Rework % = (Reworked Units / Total Units Produced) × 100

4. Process Capability (Cp)
Definition:

- USL = Upper Specification Limit
- LSL = Lower Specification Limit

Purpose:
- Measures how well a process fits within given tolerance limits.

5. Defective Parts Per Million (DPPM)
Definition: 
The number of defective parts per million produced.

Formula: 
DPPM = (Defective Parts / Total Parts Produced) × 1,000,000

Purpose:

- A lower DPPM means higher product reliability.



6. Process Capability Index (Cpk)
Definition: 
Measures how close a process is running to its tolerance limits, accounting for process centering.

Formula: 
Cpk = min[(USL - mean) / 3σ, (mean - LSL) / 3σ]

Purpose:
- A Cpk value greater than 1.33 indicates a capable process.
- Ensures that a process remains within specifications.
