Prysmian group at the CIGRE 2022 Technical Session in Paris

Four technical papers to share "lessons learned", best practices and expertise in the development of large power systems full range of innovative and sustainable products and services for high voltage applications on display

Milan, Italy   -   08/24/2022 - 8:43 AM

Prysmian Group, world leader in the energy and telecom cable systems industry, is pleased to return to the CIGRE Biannual Session, the leading global Technical Congress and Exhibition for power systems expertise, to be held in Paris from 28 August to 2 September 2022.

Prysmian Group is playing a leading role in the development of power grid infrastructures to support the transition from fossil fuels to renewables, such as wind power, and stands out for its long-standing tradition and excellent reputation within the CIGRE community, where it participates to Working Groups and Technical and Study Committees.

The CIGRE Technical Session is also an important moment to exchange scientific knowledge and Prysmian Group engineers will in fact present four technical papers that outline the findings stemming from current or past projects to share "lessons learned", best practices and expertise: "Performance and characterization tests on HPTE insulation material" authored by Giovanni Pozzati, Grazia Berardi, Davide Pietribiasi and Stefano Franchi Bononi; "Practical experience and modelling of the corrosion behaviour of the Aluminium metallic cable sheath" authored by Jos Van Rossum; "Evaluation of the HVDC VSC cable system behavior in presence of transient voltage phenomena" authored by Lluis Sales; and "PD, temperature and acoustic measurement of Eleclink HVDC interconnector – anticipate failures to minimize service disruption and impact on train circulation" authored by Alessandro Pistonesi, Diego La Cascia and Giuseppe Fiscelli.

This latter paper offers a valuable insight not only on cable systems, but also on cutting-edge monitoring solutions provided thanks to the application of the Group's proprietary PRY-CAM technology, namely the first-ever Partial Discharge monitoring system for HVDC.

At CIGRE's Technical Exhibition, the Group will display its innovative high-tech underground and submarine cable solutions, as well as its turnkey offer that leverages extensive engineering resources, manufacturing facilities and a wide range of advanced installation capabilities.

Among the most noticeable cable solutions the Group will showcase are its dynamic cables for High Voltage submarine applications that allow to build offshore wind farms in areas today not accessible due to high water depth, such as in the case of France's first floating offshore wind farm, Provence Grand Large.

World-class technical innovations on display will include cables with synthetic armour, which makes submarine cables 30%-50% lighter in water and enables ultra-deep installations in marine ecosystems previously considered out of reach. This range includes the 500 kV DC cable systems for installation at record depths that are planned to be deployed in May 2024 in the Tyrrhenian Sea at a depth exceeding 2,200 meters.

For underground projects, Prysmian Group will present its eco-friendly HVDC P-Laser technology, insulated with HPTE (High Performance Thermoplastic Elastomer). This cable is fully recyclable and results in 30% lower CO2 emissions during its production. It was chosen for the German HVDC cable projects: three vital energy corridors that will transmit the clean energy generated by the wind farms off the northern shores of Germany to the country's industry-packed South.
