200 km Afumex cables for a new motorway in Italy

Prysmian Group has been awarded a contract worth more than €2 million by You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login SCRL, a cooperative company constituted by Astaldi SpA, Pizzarotti SpA and ACI SpA, for the supply of 200 km of LV and MV Afumex cables (Afumex 750, Afumex 1000 amico, RF 31-22). The cables will be produced at the Italian plants of Giovinazzo, Merlino and Pignataro Maggiore and will be installed along a 15 km stretch, joining the A8 Milan-Varese and A9 Milan-Como motorways, of the new Pedemontana motorway, currently under construction in the North of Italy. The cables will be laid along 5.5 km of buried section, 5.2 km of embankment and 3 km of artificial tunnels.

The Pedemontana Lombarda Motorway is a major piece of road infrastructure, running through an essentially urban area – the North of Milan –, which is densely populated and heavily built up, having developed in a sprawling fashion that has left little of the original landscape. At the end of the works, the motorway will connect five different provinces (Bergamo, Monza - Brianza, Milan, Como, Varese) inhabited by about 4 million people and where more than 300,000 companies operate, accounting for 10% of Italian GDP.

Michele Mossio, T&I Director of Prysmian Italy, says: "This is one of the few important public works under construction right now in Italy and taking part is important.  It is yet another of our contributions to Milan and to Expo 2015, in which we're involved by supplying our products and experience to the many companies based in Lombardy and Northern Italy."

The Pedemontana Lombarda project comprises 67 km of motorway, 20 km of ring roads and 70 km of related road works and will help relieve the congestion on local roads. The stretch for which Prysmian will supply the cables is a heavily trafficked road with two lanes in both directions.

The cables will be delivered by the end of 2014.
