Nexans technical conference sheds light on new fire safety cable regulation

The fire safety cable industry is changing in light of new legislation and proper understanding of these changes is crucial if manufacturers, distributors, specifiers and installers are to remain compliant and ensure continued fire safety in buildings. This was the key message to come out of a technical conference hosted by Nexans last week.

Around 100 key stakeholders including installers, specifiers, manufacturers and academics gathered for the conference at the Diamant Conference Centre in Brussels, Belgium.

The conference offered an overview of the newly passed EU Construction Products Regulation (CPR) which looks to create a single market for products used in construction by creating common technical standards that all member states must use in national legislation. Jacques Vertessen, Senior Expert Consultant on the CPR, and Catherine Grimonpont, expert on the CPR of the FPS Economy, commented on the position of the CPR in the hierarchy of standards and Belgian legislation.

Nexans' technical experts presented recent developments in low fire-hazard materials and advanced methods of testing cables in compliance with these new standards. Other presentations focused on topics such as fire simulation, introduced by Professor Patrick van Hees from Lund University, as well as liability in the event of a fire, led by legal expert Ludo Cornelis, Professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Of Counsel at Eubelius.

Christof Dinkelmeyer, R&D Group Leader for Fire Safety & Services at Nexans Research Centre in Nuremberg said "In light of the legal changes at both national and global levels, this conference offered a great opportunity for the stakeholders from the construction industry to get together and address the new challenges for fire safety cables. At Nexans, we are proud to guide the industry experts through these ongoing changes in the sector. We are glad that this event helped stakeholders, including in particular specifiers and installers, better understand the evolution of the legislation as well as its effects on their businesses and their relationships with clients."
