Nexans Wins EUR120M Contract From Scottish Electric Utility

Nexans has been awarded a €120m contract by SSE, Scottish Hydro Electric,  to supply and install a subsea link between the Kintyre peninsula and the mainland coast in south-west Scotland.

The transmission upgrade, which is part of SSE's wider plans to invest up to €6bn in its network between now and 2021, will release up to 150MW of additional grid capacity for renewable projects.

The French company will create a twin 230kV and 240MVA subsea cable link from a new substation on the peninsula. The project includes the supply and installation of two 41km three-core submarine cables along with six 5km single-core underground cables for the land element.

Installation will be carried out by Nexans' own cable ship, the C/S Nexans Skagerrak (pictured).

Kjetil Hovland, vice president for submarine high voltage business line at Nexans, said:  "Nexans is delighted to be working with SSE on this high-profile project that will provide vital reinforcement for Scotland's power infrastructure."
