Nexans' cables to enhance fire safety for world's largest cruise ship

STX Europe has chosen Nexans to supply cables and services to be used in the building of its new ship, Oasis 3. Nexans will deliver 5000 km of cables for the largest cruise ship in the world with a capacity of 2744 passenger cabins and 1197 crew cabins. The ship is being built for Royal Caribbean International in STX Europe's shipyard at St. Nazaire.

Nexans will supply the full range of Shiplink® halogen-free products including power, control, instrumentation and Ethernet cables. STX Europe will also install DNV (Det Norske Veritas) certified high performing fire resistant cables to maintain the circuit integrity in the event of a fire. These cables withstand temperatures up to 850°C and resist to other mechanical disturbance, such as vibration and shocks on the metallic structure. The cables will be used for all electrical devices and components on the cruise ship. Nexans has also supplied cables, such as ship cabin wiring, to subcontractors working on Oasis 3.

STX Europe also chose Nexans for its ability to provide the shipyard with customized supply chain services. In particular, Nexans employed just-in-time manufacturing process based on day-to-day forecast and in-deep tracking.

Giuseppe Borrelli, Executive VP Industry & Operators Market lines, said, "The contract with STX Europe reinforces Nexans' position as the leader in cabling for the cruise segment. It builds on a 40 year-long relationship between our two organizations and we are looking forward to delivering the cables to STX."

The cables will be delivered by July 2015 and will be manufactured at Nexans' German and French facilities.
