Dow Electrical & Telecommunications to Address Intercable Association Technical Symposium in Prague

Horgen, Switzerland – 25 November 2013 – Dow Electrical and Telecommunications (Dow E&T), business unit of The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE: DOW), will discuss the key challenges facing submarine cables, cable makers and system operators during the 46th General Meeting of the Intercable Association taking place from 25 to 29 November in Prague, Czech Republic.

Addressing members of the International Association of Cable Product and Machinery Manufacturers (Intercable), Dr. Stephen Cree, Senior Technical Development Specialist – Europe, Middle East and Africa, Dow E&T and Mikhail Bogdanov, Technical Support and Development Manager for Dow E&T in Russia, will highlight the increased investment in offshore wind farms as one of the key drivers of demand for submarine cables and explore the challenges facing cable manufacturers in designing cables that can handle the demanding conditions present in the submarine environment.

"Although the cable cores of submarine cables have much in common with their land based cousins, increased repair or replacement costs means there is a greater need for improved cable reliability and design life-time," said Dr. Cree. "The harsh operating environment and desire for additional safety margins place an ever greater emphasis on cable insulation cleanliness and robustness."

The paper will demonstrate the enhanced wet ageing performance of Dow ENDURANCE™ HFDC-4202 EC water tree retardant crosslinked polyethylene (TR-XLPE) compounds and discuss its potential for use as insulation in wet or dry design MV offshore wind farm array cables.
