What is just-in-time (JIT) easily?

Just-in-Time (JIT) is a manufacturing and inventory management philosophy that aims to improve efficiency, reduce costs and waste by producing goods only as they are needed. JIT is based on the idea that keeping large inventories of raw materials, work-in-progress, and finished goods is inefficient, costly and can lead to stockouts, delays and other issues.

1 - Pull System : Production is triggered by customer demand. This is in contrast to a push system, where production is based on forecasts and predictions and goods are produced and stored in advance in the hope that they will be sold.

2 - Small and frequent deliveries: Suppliers deliver raw materials and components to the production facility on a regular schedule, often several times a day. This allows for a steady flow of materials and helps to prevent stockouts and delays.

3 - Continuous improvement: JIT emphasizes on continuous improvement, by using the data and information generated by the system to identify and eliminate bottlenecks and inefficiencies.

JIT is implemented by creating a close relationship between suppliers, manufacturers, and customers. This allows for a smooth flow of goods and materials, and it helps to reduce lead times and improve delivery times. A JIT system also requires a high degree of coordination and communication between different departments and suppliers.

One of the most notable examples of JIT implementation is the Toyota Production System, which was developed by Taiichi Ohno, an engineer at Toyota in the 1950s. Ohno observed that the traditional mass production methods used by American automobile manufacturers were wasteful and inefficient, and he began experimenting with new methods to improve efficiency. The Toyota Production System, which is based on JIT principles, has become a model for manufacturing efficiency and is widely used in industries around the world.

JIT has been implemented in various industries such as automotive, electronics and FMCG. It has been successful in many cases by reducing inventory and waste, improving efficiency, and increasing flexibility.
