Information

IRM 901, IRM 902 and IRM 903 are replacements for ASTM no. 1, no. 2 and no. 3 Oils.

The inventory of no. 2 and no. 3 was exhausted during 1993. The manufacture of the subject oils was discontinued at the end of 1990. United States OSHA regulations require labelling of these oils as suspect carcinogens which discourages commercial production.

Subcommittee D11.15 on Degradation Tests which has jurisdiction for D 471 has initiated an emergency standard which specifies new oils to replace No. 2 and No. 3 Oils. The emergency standard passed subcommittee ballot in 1993 and was approved by D11 main in December, 1993.

It is expected that it will be on the January, 1994 ballot of the ASTM Committee on Standards (COS.) Upon approval by COS which should take 30-60 days, an announcement should appear in SN (Standardisation News) and the emergency standard will be published in the Annual Book of ASTM Standards for a maximum of two years. The subcommittee will immediately initiate the processing of the emergency standard through normal procedures in order that a full consensus standard may be developed.

One of the requirements established by D11.15 was that the replacements not require labelling as suspect carcinogens and that they have negative "Ames" tests for mutagenic and carcinogenic activity. The new oils are not duplicates of the old oils and are identified as IRM 902 and IRM 903, respectively. One manufacturer, Calumet Lubricants Co., was approved for the Industry Reference Materials (IRM) designated in the emergency standard. The emergency standard specifies the properties of the oils in sufficient detail that other manufacturers should be able to make satisfactory IRMs, subject to approval by D11.15.

The emergency standard also gives procedures for testing rubber items with the new IRMs and calculating what the results would have been if the tests had been made with No. 2 or No. 3 Oil.

Only a limited number of rubber compounds could be tested and tile calculations will be most accurate for compounds which are similar to those tested and identified in the emergency standard. Users who still have supplies of No.2 or No.3 Oil may wish to save as much as possible for comparative testing with the new IRMs.

It should be noted that an emergency standard, if published, will not be binding upon anyone. It will require good faith between vendors and their customers to accept the replacements for No. 2 and No. 3 Oils as the best available, weighing all of the. issues.

A.2.1 General descriptions

A.2.1.1 Oil No. 1 (ASTM oil No. 1)
This is a "low volume increase" oil consisting of a closely controlled blend of mineral oils comprising a solventextracted,
chemically-treated dewaxed paraffinic residuum and neutral oil.

A.2.1.2 Oil No. 2 (IRM 902)
This is a "medium volume increase" oil obtained by solvent extraction and by acid and clay treatment of a
high-viscosity distillate from selected naphthenic (Gulf Coastal) crude oils.

A.2.1.3 Oil No. 3 (IRM 903)
This is a "high volume increase" oil consisting of a closely controlled blend of two lubricating-oil fractions
obtained by vacuum distillation of selected naphthenic (Gulf Coastal) crude oils.
