General Cable To Invest $3.7 In Jackson For Its Data Communication Cable Business

Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner Randy Boyd, along with officials from General Cable Industries Inc., announced the company will invest $3.7 million and create approximately 51 jobs in Jackson for its data communication cable business.

"The manufacturing sector employs over 333,000 Tennesseans and it is great news that General Cable will be growing this sector," Boyd said. "I want to thank General Cable for creating new jobs in Jackson and for strengthening our Team Tennessee workforce."

General Cable has 170 employees at its 186,000-square-foot facility, which opened in the Jackson-Madison County Industrial Park at 19 Bobrick Drive in 1991.

"It makes me feel good that we are doing good work in our community," Madison County Mayor Jimmy Harris said. "Existing plants continue to expand, and most of our new jobs come from existing industry."

General Cable is a global leader in the development, design, manufacture, marketing and distribution of aluminum, copper and fiber-optic wire and cable products for energy, construction, industrial, specialty and communications markets.

"The skills of General Cable's Jackson team and their solid performance were major factors as we considered our options to support our data communications business," said Mark Thackeray, General Cable's senior vice president of global manufacturing & North American operations.

The announcement means the Jackson facility is prepared to take on additional product lines and production capabilities.

Once under a feasibility study for closure, General Cable of Jackson was selected by Penton Media's IndustryWeek Magazine as one of the best manufacturing plants in North America for 2013.  General Cable joined six other plants across the country in receiving the designation.

Lean manufacturing, combined with Six Sigma quality tool improvements, continues to drive major improvements in each of General Cable's manufacturing operations — 57 worldwide, 22 in the United States.
