Determination of tensile stress-strain properties DIN 53 504 (ISO 37)

Tensile strength (at break) is defined as the ratio of the force at break to the initial cross-section of the specimen. Elastomers usually exhibit the maximum force in the moment of breaking apart; consequently "tensile strength at break" is identical with "tensile strength at yield" at room temperature and above. (in contrast to many metal compounds) Elongation is break is defined as the ratio of change of length (at the moment of breaking) to the initial length of the specimen.
