What is the cable Propagation Coefficient ?

This is a measure of how the signal travels along the line. It is a very complex coefficient.

This coefficient can be separated into two parts. The real part of the propagation coefficient is attenuation coefficient, α , and the complex part is phase change coefficient, ß. The relationship is given by

Attenuation Coefficient

This is a measure of how a signal is attenuated or gets smaller as it travels along a line. This is also important, as it is from this that we can determine the maximum length of line without amplifiers or repeaters.
