WRAS Approval to BS 6920 for Drinking Water Cables

What is WRAS Approval?
WRAS (Water Regulations Advisory Scheme) approval ensures that materials and products used in contact with drinking water comply with BS 6920 standards. This certification guarantees that the product:
  • Does not negatively affect water quality.
  • Does not release harmful substances.
  • Maintains the safety and purity of drinking water.

BS 6920 Compliance Criteria for Drinking Water Cables
Drinking water cables must pass the following stringent tests to achieve WRAS approval:

1. Taste and Odor Test
Objective: Ensure the cable materials do not impart an undesirable taste or smell to drinking water.
  • The cable is submerged in water for a specified duration.
  • A sensory panel evaluates the water for taste or odor changes.
  • Requirement: The water must remain neutral in taste and odor.

2. Appearance Test
Objective: Ensure that the cable does not discolor water or cause turbidity.
  • The cable is immersed in water under controlled conditions.
  • The water is analyzed for any visible changes in clarity or color.
  • Requirement: No discoloration or cloudiness should occur.

3. Leaching Test (Toxicity)
Objective: Verify that no harmful substances are released from the cable into the water.
  • Chemical analysis (e.g., gas chromatography or spectrometry) is performed.
  • Levels of organic and inorganic substances are measured.
  • Requirement: All detected substances must be below regulatory limits.

4. Microbial Growth Test
Objective: Ensure the cable material does not promote bacterial or fungal growth.
  • The cable is exposed to water in controlled conditions.
  • Microbial activity is monitored over a specific time.
  • Requirement: The material must not support significant microbial growth.

5. Durability Under Drinking Water Conditions
Objective: Confirm the cable remains durable and safe for long-term use in drinking water applications.
  • Materials are tested under prolonged exposure to water.
  • Requirement: The cable must maintain integrity and performance over time.

Example: WRAS Approved Drinking Water Cable
A drinking water cable with WRAS approval:
  • Taste and Odor Neutrality: No plastic or chemical taste imparted to the water.
  • Appearance Stability: Water remains clear and free from discoloration.
  • Non-Toxic: No harmful chemicals or substances are leached into the water.
  • Anti-Microbial: Does not promote microbial growth.
  • Durability: Maintains long-term safety and performance.

Why WRAS Approval Matters for Drinking Water Cables
- Ensures compliance with UK water regulations.
- Guarantees safety for public drinking water systems.
- Provides market access for water-related products.
