The formation of wooden reel mold depends on the following conditions.

Fungi that grow on wood are commonly referred to as "wood-decay fungi" or "wood-rotting fungi." These fungi can cause damage to wooden structures, such as houses, decks, and fences, as well as wooden objects, such as furniture and musical instruments. Wood-decay fungi are able to decompose wood by breaking down cellulose and lignin, the main structural components of wood.

There are many different species of wood-decay fungi, and each may have specific requirements for growth and survival, such as moisture, temperature, and pH levels. Some common causes of fungal growth on wood include:

High humidity: Fungi need moisture to grow, and wood that is exposed to high humidity or water is more likely to be attacked by wood-decay fungi.

Poor ventilation: Inadequate airflow can cause wood to remain damp for long periods, providing an ideal environment for fungal growth.

Lack of maintenance: Properly maintaining wooden structures can prevent fungal growth. For example, sealing exposed end-grain and painting or staining wood can help to protect it from moisture and fungal attack.

Insect infestation: Some insects can cause damage to wood that creates ideal conditions for fungal growth.

Mold is a type of fungus that produces pigmented spores and can grow on the surface of wood packaging. There are thousands of molds that grow on wood, feeding on the structural polymers, sugars, and proteins in the wood.  Generally, molds produce spores that are clearly visible as black, white, green, orange, or purple spots on the wood.  There are even some molds that are not visible to the naked eye.

Mold spores can easily spread to other damp surfaces, including other wood products. Depending on the mold species, surfaces available, and environmental conditions, spores can grow and spread in a few days, but can also take months or even years to spread and grow.  In addition, different wood species are affected differently by molds, due to the wood's stored sugar content.  Any untreated wood can be at risk of acquiring mold without the proper care.
