Northern Cables With Announcement Of A Government Investment to Assist an Expansion

Northern Cables, a Brockville-based company that manufactures copper, aluminum and low-voltage cables for industrial, mining and commercial use, received $820,000 from the Ministry of Economic Development and Growth to expand its Brockville facilities by 30,000 sq. ft. and allow for investment in new equipment to manufacture aluminum products at its Prescott facility.

"We're really excited," Shelley Bacon, the company's CEO and founder, reported.  "We already started our site plan work a couple of weeks ago, so we anticipate being able to start the foundation for the addition in the next few days. We're just waiting on a building permit."

The provincial government support will assist the company in creating 18 new jobs while retaining its 163 existing full-time positions.  The project has a total value of $8.2 million and is expected to be completed in 2020.

The plant will also get an outdoor dome for storage to keep the millions of yards of cable safe from the elements.

"This project will help Northern Cables increase productivity, stay competitive and create good paying jobs in the province."

Northern Cables expanded into 50 California Avenue, growing to 30,000 sq. ft., then to 65,000 sq. ft., in 2000, filling the building. They rented another location in Prescott because of a pressing need to expand. For four years, that building was used to store materials that can't be exposed to the elements.

The company currently fills Brockville's 65,000 sq. ft. and Prescott's 55,000 sq. ft. facilities. They snatched up the former Selkirk building, purchasing the 75,000 sq. ft. California Avenue building and also filling that.
