The opening of the world's biggest 380kV Turnkey Cable Project Randstad380

In the first quarter of 2013, nkt cables successfully completed the world´s largest 380 kV turnkey cable project for their customer TenneT in the Netherlands. The figures are really impressive:

132 km of 380 kV XLPE cables;

    2 dual systems with a conductor cross-section of 2,500 mm2;
    Partly integrated optical fibers;
    Installation of 132 joints and 24 outdoor terminations;

    The high quality of nkt cables solutions has been demonstrated during the Randstad380 project by the installation of 132 km of 380 kV XLPE cables with a conductor cross section of 2,500 mm2, as well as 132 joints and 24 outdoor terminations. All of these were successfully tested, and the system was put into operation without any major problems.

    nkt cables decided to celebrate the opening of the plant together with their main customers in project business on 26 September 2013, using the event as an opportunity to have a look INSIDE the Randstad380 project and to share with them nkt cables' INSIDE experiences and best practice in project management and project execution.

    nkt cables' main customers, including several project managers and project directors, participated in the event and discussed not only the successes in project execution, but also the lessons learned, in an open and friendly environment. Moreover, nkt cables had the possibility to gain useful feedback about the requirements and expectations of their customers. This will enable nkt cables to find the right project management approach for the future, in order to assure their customers the best experience during the execution of complex projects.

    nkt cables took their customers on site to visit the substation and Leon Reijnders (nkt cables Project Manager for Randstad380) explained the main challenges which nkt cables had to face during all the project phases. nkt cables new technical innovations, focusing on increased reliability, reduced total cost of ownership and decreased environmental impact, were presented by Volker Waschk (SVP Research & Development), while Michael Gutzeit (SVP Project Execution) illustrated the project management approach and stimulated an exciting and really intensive bilateral discussion with the audience.

    The event was organized like a seminar about best practice in project management and therefore nkt cables invited Dr. Ir Hennis de Ridder, who was professor at the Delft University of Technology from 1995 to 2012, to inspire nkt cables and their customers about the new trends in Project Management. He addressed the issues related to the increased complexity of the projects, expounded several possible contractual approaches, and talked about how it is possible to model project relationships. Another inspiring subject has been the cooperation between customer and subcontractors and the related splitting and handling of responsibilities within a project.

    In fact challenges like the crossing of dikes, railway tracks and roads situated on the cable route, strict environmental restrictions, different soil conditions and a compressed project time schedule make professional and advanced project management the key success factor in a turnkey project like Randstad380.

    Project management and project execution play a major role in the creation of nkt cables reputation and the closer nkt cables can get to their customers in all phases of a project, the more successful nkt cables will be in the competitive future market. The event was a great success, and nkt cables was able to network a lot with all participants. nkt cables would like to thank all who took part for a very enjoyable and constructive day.
