Taihan wins two major cable contracts

Taihan Electric Wire announced that it has won two orders worth a total $74 million, one in Saudi Arabia and another in the US.

Riyadh Metro contract

The first is a turn-key contract to supply 380-kV electric cables for the Riyadh Metro in Saudi Arabia. Taihan will supply the whole set of HV cables and connecting parts. It will also design, install and test the cables.

The Riyadh Metro project costs a total of $25 billion and is aimed at connecting the whole city. Taihan said it will supply over 65% of the requirements for the whole subway project. The company expects to win additional orders related to the metro project such as new power substations and other infrastructures.

Taihan said that it has maintained a strong presence in the Middle East, particularly for high-end 380-kV cables, where it claims to have held on to a 50% share of the market since 2012.

California to get more power

In the US, Taihan and Daewoo International were awarded a $35 million contract by domestic power transmission agency Southern California Edison (SCE). The project involves the supply of a 500-kV underground HV-voltage cable that will connect the areas of Chino Hills in California.

Taihan will supply cables and joints and handle installation on site while Daewoo International will provide overall management for the project.

The Korean producer said that the project in California will likely open the door to other similar energy cable projects.
