Submarine Cable and Terrestrial Developments Upcoming Projects



Search engine giant Google is said to be considering an investment in a new, multi-million-dollar trans-Pacific submarine cable, the Wall Street Journal has reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The report notes that Google would control its own portion of the new subsea cable and use it to connect data centres in Oregon and elsewhere with Japan. In related news, the WSJ claims that software giant Microsoftis planning a similar endeavour. A spokeswoman for Microsoft confirmed that the company is in talks to help build a cable connecting the US with China, South Korea and Japan.

BT, as part of the wider Digital Scotland project, has started deploying the first batch of 20 new submarine fibre-optic cables around the western side of Scotland's Highlands and Islands region. The work is being supported by Global Marine Systems, Orange Marine and A-2-Sea Solutions. The GBP264 million (USD448.9 million) Digital Scotland scheme aims to ensure that 85% of Scottish homes and businesses can access BT's fibre-to-the-cabinet/premises (FTTC/P) network by the end of 2015, rising to around 95% by the end of 2017.

The second phase of Kenya's National Optic Fibre Broadband Infrastructure (NOFBI) rollout is likely to get underway in July, with an additional 1,600km of fibre to be deployed across the country. To date, 4,300km of fibre has been deployed, covering 28 counties; phase two will see the number of counties covered increase to 47. According to AllAfrica, the project is being funded by a USD72.5 million loan from EXIM Bank of China; Huawei Technologies of China will take charge of the rollout.

Subsea cable operator Gulf Bridge International (GBI) has extended its network from du's landing station in Fujairah, UAE to a carrier-neutral datamena data centre facility in Dubai (also UAE). The datamena facility will enable the extension of GBI's network into Dubai, and customers are expected to benefit from seamless end-to-end connectivity within the GBI network.

TeliaSonera International Carrier (TSIC) has selected Ciena Corporation´s converged packet optical platform for the pan-European segment of its global fibre network. By deploying Ciena's 5400 switching platform across its core infrastructure in Europe, TSIC hopes to create a scalable and flexible Optical Transport Network (OTN)-based network to support service providers.
