Nkt cables going to great lengths for the WoDS windfarm project

Nkt cables completed a submarine cable with a continuous length of 31km for use on the West of Duddon Sands (WoDS) offshore windfarm project in the UK. The project is a joint venture between Dong Energy and Scottish Power Renewables. The new windfarm, located off the coast of Cumbria and Lancashire in North West England, will have a capacity of 389 MW when completed, and the power will be exported to the shore via submarine export cables supplied by nkt cables. The export cable manufactured and supplied by nkt cables consists of a 3 core design with 1000mm² copper conductors and integrated fibre optics. Each cable is capable of transmitting more than 200 MVA. In total nkt cables are supplying in excess of 80km of submarine export cable for the WoDS windfarm project.

The benefit of supplying such long continuous lengths are the reduction in offshore installation time and risk during installation, thereby providing significant cost benefits to offshore windfarm developers.

Continuous 31km cables are a truly impressive technical and logistical feat; however it doesn't stop there for nkt cables, who have the capability and infrastructure to provide continuous lengths of the above size cable in excess of more than double this length, from our deepwater Logistics Centre in Rotterdam.
