Nexans Wins Contracts to Supply two TSOs

French cable manufacturer Nexans has been awarded contracts to supply two cable systems to transmission system operators (TSOs) in Italy and Germany.

The company will supply 380 kV cable systems to Terna of Italy and Amprion of Germany in deals worth $26m in total.

Terna Rete Italia's new 380 kV project is aimed at improving the quality of the electricity network serving South-Eastern Sicily, especially as electricity production in this area increases both through conventional and renewable sources. Nexans will design, supply, install and test two major EHV underground cable circuits connecting the Priolo and Melilli power stations in the province of Siracusa.

As part of the German Power Grid Expansion Act (EnLAG), which promotes the partial undergrounding of overhead lines in residential areas, Amprion is building a new 380 kV line connecting substations in Wesel on Borken, Steinfurt and Lingen to Meppen in Emsland. Nexans will design, supply, install and test the entire cable system for the construction of the first pilot section of partial undergrounding.

"These 2 important European projects demonstrate once again our technical leadership in EHV, especially as part of partial underground solutions," says Dirk Steinbrink, Nexans' Executive Vice President High Voltage & Underwater Cables Business Group.

The cables will be manufactured in the Nexans High Voltage factory in Charleroi (Belgium), while the accessories will be produced in Cossonay (Switzerland).
