Subsea cable work to start

Laying of a new subsea cable between Barra and Eriskay is due to get underway this weekend.

Briggs Marine are the contractors for Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) to lay the new cable to increase capacity on Barra.

Depending on the weather, the company are due to work for ten days from this Sunday using three large vessels.

Fiona Monaghan Briggs Marine's Project Support Coordinator said: "Marine operations will be carried out from the vessels Forth Guardsman, Forth Sentinel and Forth Fighter.

"Forth Guardsman is a Cable Laying Vessel and will perform cable installation operations using a combination of spud legs near shore and a four point mooring pattern offshore."

She continued: "Forth Guardsman will be supported by Forth Sentinel as Anchor Handling Tug and Forth Fighter as Dive Support Vessel.  During cable lay operations, Forth Guardsman will be restricted in the ability to manoeuvre, therefore a Notice to Mariners will be issued to request that all vessels operating within this area keep their distance and pass at minimum speed.  The operations will be carried out on a day operations basis and the vessels will display the appropriate day shapes and lights (during reduced visibility) required by the IRPCS and will actively transmit an AIS signal.  A continuous watch will be maintained on VHF Channel 16 and DSC."
