Iberdrola Proposes 53-mile Transmission Line to Hurley

Iberdrola USA, the parent company of New York State Electric & Gas and other utilities in the Northeast, has proposed to build a 53-mile transmission line from New Scotland, near Albany, to Hurley in Ulster County.

The line would run along the New York State Thruway corridor for 42 of the 53 miles, according to a filing with New York state.

Iberdrola plans to put the line underground to protect Hudson River and Catskill Mountain views.

The transmission line is intended to help reduce congestion on the state's electrical grid and improve the energy flow downstate into New York City and Long Island.

Iberdrola's plans were filed in response to the New York Power Authority's request for proposals to address the potential closure of the Indian Point power plant in Buchanan.

The licenses for the 2,000-megawatt nuclear plant are set to expire by 2015.
