Lubrizol Proposal Prompts Revision of UL 1581 Reference Standard

The Lubrizol Corporation announces that it was successful in helping revise the UL 1581 reference standard for electrical wires, cables, and flexible cords. Two added tables will help wire and cable manufacturers develop higher-temperature-rated ruggedized products using Lubrizol's Estane(R) TPU polymers as a jacketing material.

Lubrizol submitted a proposal to have TPU-specific tables created in section 50 of UL 1581. Following a review by UL's Collaborative Standards Development System (CSDS), the revision of UL 1581 was approved. The latest revision of UL 1581 dated January 30, 2013 includes the two new tables: 50.227.1 and 50.227.2 for 90 degrees Celsius and 105 degrees Celsius TPUs respectively. For the 90 degrees Celsius rating, the table specifies maintaining 65 percent of original tensile strength and 70 percent of original ultimate elongation. For the 105 degrees Celsius rating, the material is required to maintain 35 percent of original tensile strength and 85 percent of original ultimate elongation. These new requirements reflect the aging behavior of polyether TPUs.

"Until recently, TPUs could only be rated at a maximum of 80 degrees Celsius under section 50 of UL standard 1581-there were no tables specifying requirements for temperatures higher than that," notes Chetan Makadia, Lubrizol senior applications engineer for Engineered Polymers. This often led cable-products manufacturers to bypass TPU as a jacketing material for cables used in higher-temperature industrial applications. With the revised standard, it is now possible for cable customers to enjoy all the benefits of Lubrizol's Estane TPU polymers, including resistance to oil and chemicals, as well as the higher temperatures.

Lubrizol manufactures several different Estane TPU products for wire and cable markets meeting the new requirements of UL 1581 for 90 degrees Celsius and 105 degrees Celsius.
