LS Cable & System is the first in Korea to obtain international standard

LS Cable & System (President & CEO Koo Ja-Eun) announced on December 5 that it had become the first in Korea to meet the Conseil International des Grands Reseaux Electriques (CIGRE) international technical standard for 250kV HVDC XLPE cable products. This means that the HVDC cables of LS Cable & System have the same performance as the next-generation products of its main overseas competitors.

Extra high-voltage direct current transmission is a method of supplying electricity by converting the AC power produced by a power plant into DC power, transmitting it over a long distance then converting it back to AC again at the receiving end. Its advantage is the ability to transmit large quantities of electric power with minimal loss over long distances. The extra high-voltage cable used for this purpose must be durable enough to withstand the high voltage load produced during DC transmission. LS Cable & System is the only company in Korea to produce such an HVDC cable. Importantly, this cable passed the long-term reliability test with a high score establishing LS Cable & System as a producer of next-generation cable products. In the long-term reliability test, 463kV is applied at the maximum allowable temperature of 90°C after which the cable is heated and cooled repeatedly for an entire month while electric current flows continually (the max. temp. of the new conductor is 90°C compared with the max. temp. of existing conductors being 55°C). The new cable performed flawlessly during the entire month-long test.

This cable was developed by LS Cable & System as part of a consortium consisting of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers, Korea Electronics Technology Institute, Korea Institute of Ceramic Engineering & Technology, LG Chem, and five universities (Hanyang Univ., Chungbuk National Univ., Daejin University, Hoseo Univ. and Honam Univ.). The cable is the product of a special project carried out as a national project sponsored by the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning. On August 28, it was selected by the Ministry of Science, ICT & Future Planning as one of the best national R&D projects of 2012. All tests were successfully conducted at the Gochang underground cable testing ground of KEPCO, which is certified by KOLAS (Korea Laboratory Accreditation Scheme).

The size of the HVDC market is growing very quickly with expectations that it will amount to over KRW70 trillion by 2020. With this new product LS Cable & System has thus strengthened its bridgehead for making inroads into the global HVDC market and expects to grow in proportion with the overall market.

"This certification has laid the foundation for us to make further inroads into global markets, especially Asia and the Middle East, where new extra high-voltage transmission networks based on HVDC technology are being built, and North America and Europe, where old power grids are being replaced," LS Cable & System explained. "We will continuously develop products and carry out various marketing activities targeting the power authorities of various countries and large infrastructure construction companies."

Meanwhile, last April, LS Cable & System entered into an agreement with the Danish Energy Authority to supply 285kV HVDC submarine cables and connectors. The company is working hard to penetrate global markets.
