HUBER+SUHNER set to launch new products for rail at InnoTrans 2016

UBER+SUHNER, leading international manufacturer of components and systems for optical and electrical connectivity products, is set to launch new, innovative rail connectivity solutions at this year's InnoTrans exhibition in Berlin.

HUBER+SUHNER's booth at InnoTrans focuses on solutions for Connected Mobility – the notion that HUBER+SUHNER provides instrumental components required to enable broadband network connections on board, from train-to-ground and trackside. As such, it will be showcasing key connectivity solutions allowing operators and passengers to run their increasingly demanding applications seamlessly. These include internet, e-ticketing, passenger information, train control, CCTV or fleet management.

"Travelling by train becomes infinitely more attractive with effective connectivity. Robust broadband communication links for both passengers and operators are key in driving people to use public transport," said Eric Louis-Marie, Market Manager Railway at HUBER+SUHNER. "HUBER+SUHNER connects future-oriented systems in and around the train which then become a communication platform hosting innovative applications that serve passengers as well as ensure reliable, efficient and profitable operations. We are looking forward to showing what we can do at InnoTrans."

Connections for train-to-ground wireless networks

In what will be a significant showcase of the company's latest developments, HUBER+SUHNER will be displaying its 'Massive MIMO' concept, outlining its vision for rail connectivity when the 5G standard comes into use. 'Massive MIMO' can be used to either raise bandwidth in data transmission between a train and the outside world or to provide a solution for when there are different systems in the train that all require roof top antennas.

On display at InnoTrans will be the SENCITY® Rail MIMO, a 5 port antenna MIMO roof-top antenna for train-to-ground communications. This new model consists of two broadband radiating elements for 2G/3G/4G mobile communication plus GPS and two additional ports for WiFi (2×2 MIMO) in the frequency bands 2.4-2.5 GHz and 4.9-6 GHz.

Connections for in-train Gigabit backbone

Furthermore, HUBER+SUHNER will demonstrate how a Gigabit backbone can be built into the train using fiber optic and broadband ethernet cables to link active components.

HUBER+SUHNER will therefore be showing its project-specific Gigabit inter-vehicle jumper cables at the event, which are resistant to vibration and shock according to the IEC 61373 standard. Tested over several millions of inter-vehicle movement cycles and installed for years on operating trains, these cable systems have shown that, even under harsh environmental conditions, the data transmission performance remains extremely stable over time. This proves that the technology represents a reliable option for Gigabit backbones in trains.

As part of its display, HUBER+SUHNER will be demonstrating an array of components which will ultimately result in setting up high data rate infrastructure under demanding environmental conditions.

Combating harsh environment effects

Also on display at InnoTrans will be HUBER+SUHNER's Q-ODC 12 connectors. These connectors are unique in the market as they are able to handle 12 fibers with a push-pull coupling mechanism in a very compact housing. With trackside environments being a significant hurdle facing operators when installing systems, the Q-ODC 12 offers the highest level of outdoor installation safety, while also being waterproof, dustproof and corrosion resistant.

Plug and play fiber optics system

The MASTERLINE Ultimate Small Cell range is HUBER+SUHNER's pre-assembled fiber optic system, which supports up to four trackside remote devices, connecting them with easy-to-install Q-ODC fiber optic jumpers. The compact nature of the MASTERLINE means there is minimum spatial impact with maximum effect. By using MASTERLINE, operators limit the risk of field failures and down time, resulting in a reduced development cost. It also optimises fiber backhaul using a Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) solution.

Reliable signal and power transmission

In addition to the connectivity solutions for data transmission, HUBER+SUHNER will also be showcasing its entire range of RADOX® products. The electron beam cross-linked insulation materials are used over the entire range of products – from signal and power cables to fiber optic and coaxial cables – thus creating extremely robust products for harsh environmental conditions.

HUBER+SUHNER will also showcase its thin-walled signal cables, RADOX® Tenuis-TW, which – when compared to conventional railway cables – are especially lightweight and compact. Their electron beam cross-linked RADOX® insulation material ensures that they retain their shape even under extremely high temperatures caused, for example, by short circuits. RADOX® Tenuis-TW cables can be used for power and signal transmission within the train, including for cabinets, underfloor cabling, and monitoring status of light, brakes, or other devices.

By showcasing all of these innovations together, HUBER+SUHNER will ultimately demonstrate a complete solution which the rail industry can use to fully equip itself for the future.

Exhibition visitors can see the HUBER+SUHNER vision for future railway connections in Hall 2.2 at InnoTrans 2016, Berlin, 20-23 September, at a joint stand (207) with SWISSRAIL.
