Layoffs at central Pennsylvania ignition wire plant on hold

Officials say planned layoffs at a central Pennsylvania ignition wire plant have been put on hold for the moment.

In December, General Cable of Highland Heights, Kentucky said it would reduce the workforce at the Altoona General Cable plant from about 210 people to between 30 to 50 workers.

The layoffs were to begin in late February or March, but company spokeswoman Lisa Lawson said that they may not begin until early summer.

General Cable said earlier that it would keep the plant open to make ignition wire assemblies not used in automobiles and to maintain a warehouse for finished products.

Officials said 160 to 180 workers would be cut when the company moves its automotive ignition wire operations to a plant in Nogales, Mexico.
