JDR to Supply Inter-Array Cables for Sandbank Offshore Wind Farm

JDR, a provider of technology connecting the global offshore energy industry, has been awarded a contract by VBMS to provide inter-array cable for the Vattenfall AB Sandbank offshore wind farm.

Under the contract, JDR will design and develop 105km of inter-array cable, including a new coilable 630mm² copper core cable and other cable accessories.

Scheduled to be constructed 90km west of Sylt Island within the exclusive economic zone off the German North Sea coast, the Sandbank offshore wind farm will feature 72x4MW turbines in water depths between 25m and 37m. The wind farm construction is likely to commence in 2015.

JDR executive chairman Pat Herbert said: "Sandbank is JDR's third German wind farm win and another important step forward in the development of offshore wind energy in Northern Europe.

"This cable's coilable design is another JDR initiative to help drive down cost as it supports greater flexibility in vessel selection and storage solutions.

"The JDR team is committed to the long-term development of the offshore wind industry, importantly using technology innovations to support the evolution of cost-effective offshore wind energy production."

The construct scope includes designing and manufacturing of two inter-array cables, a 185mm² copper conductor cable and a 630mm² copper conductor cable.

Additionally, the company will provide cable accessories such as pulling grips, hang-offs, connectors, cable cleats and subsea repair joints, as part of the contract.

JDR will manufacture the cables at its Hartlepool facility, the UK.
