Japan's Furukawa To Open Fiber Optic Cable Factory in Tangier

Japanese group Furukawa Electric, the world's third largest fiberoptic manufacturer, is moving forward with plans to establish a manufacturing facility in Tangier, Morocco. It aims at "offering cable assemblies to telecommunications companies in Africa and in Europe while getting ready to produce connectors in the future," the same source added.

Furukawa will invest around 8 million US dollars to set up the factory.  With the opening of its Morocco factory, Furukawa will be the first major company in the field to produce fiber optic cables in Africa.  Fiber optic cables will be exported from the company's plants in Japan and the United States and will be assembled in the future Tangier factory.

Furukawa Electric seeks to satisfy the growing demand for communications infrastructure in Africa and the Middle East, which is expected to reach 32 million kilometers in 2018.

At the initial phase, Furukawa will supply cables to telecom companies to Africa and Europe, while aiming at producing connectors and other related parts in the future.

The Tokyo-based company said it said that its choice of Morocco to set up its factory stems from the fact that the country offers easy access to the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, as well as the country's level of security and political stability.
