HUBER+SUHNER enclosures for LuxFibre

Post Luxembourg starts offering high-speed Internet access over a fiber to the home (FTTH) network this autumn. The service, to be called LuxFibre, will offer symmetrical data rates of up to 100 Mbps.

What began several years ago as a hugely ambitious project to blanket Luxembourg with a World beating fibre optic network is now within sight of completion. Soon, every one of the country's 550,000-plus citizens will have the opportunity to benefit from the ultra-high-speed capability of a nationwide network connected to every household. And the latest fibre to the home technology from HUBER+SUHNER is playing a key part.

Superfast capability

Network speeds of up to 1Gbit/s remain a pipe dream for most countries and their consumers, but the Technologies Department of Post Group Luxembourg is well on the way to offering this superfast capability to every Luxembourg household.
The final stage of the fibre to the home (FTTH) programme to connect every dwelling to an underground fibre optic network began in 2010 and, by the end of this year, installation will be completed to half the country's population. Those who subscribe to Post Luxembourg's top of the range LuxFibre XL service will benefit from download speeds of 1Gbit/s and upload speeds of 500Mbit/s – comparable with the very best Worldwide and easily capable of handling the most demanding internet applications such as HD channel download and recording and gaming. Even those that chose the basic level LuxFibre S can expect download speeds of an impressive 30Mbit/s!

The company is deploying the FTTH network in a point to point (P2P) structure using a multi-fibre network with open access. Homes are being connected via two point to point fibres to an optical distribution frame within a local point of presence (POP) and these POPs are being rolled out across the country. For the home, the fibre will normally enter the property underground at a so-called building entry point (BEP), where fibre to the home becomes fibre in the home. Here, Post Luxembourg and its installers have called on HUBER+SUHNERs expertise in fibre optic distribution and termination by specifying one of the company's Optibox enclosures designed to simplify the installation process.
Easy to install boxes

OptiBox enclosures fulfil all the typical fibre cable requirements such as the bending radius limits, fibre overlength storage and the secure attachment of splice connections. The chosen Optibox 4 enclosure is an easy to install mounting, splicing and patching box that consists of a base, fibre tray and cover which offers protection to IP54. Conventional loose tube cables, microcables or micro ducts can be secured within the housing so that the fibres are protected from bending and from any adverse environmental issues. Up to four SC format adaptors can be accommodated and the enclosure provides one cable entry and four cable exit points, one of which is bend-radius protected.

HUBER+SUHNER's Optibox distribution and termination enclosures are currently being specified throughout the World as the deployment of FTTH networks increases to match the needs of the consumer.
