Habia Cable : Advice for ordering customised cable

To achieve an optimal, cost-effective solution for your application, a number of basic facts are needed. Habia Cable will guide you through the ordering process.

There are many reasons that a cable solution needs to be produced exclusively for a particular application. It is important to determine which characteristics are absolute requirements and which are negotiable preferences, to prevent the cable from being more expensive than necessary. The following areas are important in an order.

The environment surrounding the application

It is important to know the environment where the cable will be used.
Examples:

•    If the application is outdoors or indoors (should it be UV and weather resistant)?

•    Over what temperature range will it work?

•    Will it be exposed to aggressive chemicals or radiation?

•    Are there mechanical stresses (pressure, tension or torsion forces)?

•    Is the application static or will it be dynamic?

Appearance and function

There may be special physical requirements for the configuration of the cable. This can include dimensional requirements such as cross-sections, maximum outer diameter and other critical dimensions. Other variables such as weight and termination method can be crucial.

When it comes to the mechanical requirements, the cable may have a specific flex-life or need to have a high level of flexibility. Strain loads, water resistance, pressure resistance and density (buoyancy) are other possible properties to consider.

The outer finish of the cable can also be important, colour, texture, circularity and markings are some of the aesthetic requirements to take into consideration. Even requirements on cable length, quantity and form of delivery (reel sizes, drums, pallets etc.), are of great importance when ordering.

Requirements for safety

In some cases, the cable needs to have properties that prevent the spread of fire, smoke, and toxic / corrosive fumes (halogen-free materials). Electrical requirements are another area to consider. Features such as low-noise, impedance, phase stability and electrical length will all affect the cable design.

Quality and documentation

In some areas, it is of utmost importance to comply with particular specifications or to achieve certification of the cable. The most common are for RoHS and REACH compliance, but many other documentation requirements may apply depending on the application or environment in which the cable will be used.

Use our expertise

We understand that our customers are experts in their field, but cannot always be the experts when it comes to the cable. In these instances, check with Habia Cable's skilled specialists who will guide you through all the issues.

- It is important that we know from the beginning the anticipated demand for deliveries at full production for the best possible product to be drawn up or prototype to be produced, says Annette Eriksson, Technical Manager at Habia Cable.
