Furukawa Electric to ramp up production of optical fiber cables in Brazil

Furukawa Electric Co. said Sept. 2 that it will invest $18 million (1.78 billion yen) in its Brazilian subsidiary to expand the manufacture of optical fiber cables in the South American country.

With Brazil set to host soccer's 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics, the country is pushing to install more broadband networks nationwide to improve its communications systems.

Furukawa Industrial SA Produtos Eletricos' plant in Sorocaba near Sao Paulo is expected to expand production in late 2014 to 2.3 million kilometers of optical fiber cables a year, or 40 percent of Brazil's expected annual needs.
