Daewoo-Taihan wins electricity cable order in US

Daewoo International Corp. said on Tuesday that it has won a $35 million contract to build an underground cable line to power Chino Hills, a suburb of Los Angeles, California in the United States.

To win the first U.S. order of the high voltage cable, Daewoo International joined hands with Taihan Electric Wire, Korea's second largest wire and cable maker. Taihan is the nation's only cable maker capable of producing a cable with a 500 kilovolt capacity.

The U.S. is the fourth country that has placed the high voltage cable order to Taihan since it started selling to Russia in 2010.

"Daewoo and Taihan Electric Wire will continue to cooperate closely in order to win more orders in the U.S. where there is a strong demand for electricity cables," the company said in a statement.

The company said the latest order will be a stepping stone toward securing a leading position in the U.S. market where there are ever-increasing demands for electricity and new electricity cable.

Daewoo International will operate as the project manager, while Taihan will supply the cable products and build it. The two companies won the order from Southern California Edison, a primary electricity supply company based in California.
