ABB targets Oman growth beyond electrical sector

ABB Oman, the Sultanate arm of the Switzerland-based ABB Group, plans to achieve higher growth in the country by pursuing opportunities away from the electrical sector, country manager Brian Hull has revealed.

At a media briefing held at its office in Muscat on Wednesday, the power and automation technologies company highlighted its operations, projects, technologies, CSR initiatives in Oman and programmes to develop national talent.

"ABB started operations in Oman in 1995 with a project in the power sector. While electricity remains the biggest sector for us, we are increasingly operating in other sectors such as infrastructure, hotels and retail," said Hull.

"We hope to grow with the Oman economy. We expect 2014 to be a year of strong growth for us and that will continue in the coming years as we invest in high quality products and focus on developing local talent," he added.

ABB has launched an internship programme for 2014 as part of efforts to support development of skills among local engineering students or fresh graduates from the universities in Oman.

"The programme will aim to provide opportunities to talent from the colleges and universities of Oman to gain valuable work experience and professional coaching early in their careers. We want to give young graduates a real taste of working life in the industry and private sector," Hull said.

He added that ABB plans to set up its Sohar office this year.
