Danish transmission system operator You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login said that it has completed procurement for the various cables that will connect the Kriegers Flak offshore wind farm to Denmark's grid, with awards to ABB, LS Cable and Nexans.

Contracts have been signed for a total of 200 km of cable, consisting of three cable contracts amounting to some DKK 800 million ($122 million) - about a quarter of the total construction project cost of DKK 3.5 billion ($533 million). Cable laying will begin in autumn 2016 and the windfarm is expected to be commissioned in 2018.

ABB said that its share of the award totalled around $100 million in submarine cables which will connect the offshore wind farm platforms of Kriegers Flak A and B to Rødvig, in Denmark. ABB will design, supply and install three HVAC (high voltage alternating current) 220 kV three-core submarine cables with a total length of about 100 km - 44 km from each of the platforms to shore and 11 km between the two platforms.

The land cables are divided into two contracts, said You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login. Korea's LS Cable and System will deliver around 95 km of 220 kV cable to connect the offshore wind turbines to the Bjæverskov and Ishøj substations in Denmark. France's Nexans will deliver just under 20 km of 400 kV cable, which is to be used to reinforce the power grid between the Ishøj substation and the Hovegaard substation near Ballerup.

"With three different contracts, two of which have been concluded with new suppliers, we are cementing our strength in the cable market," said Jens Christian Hygebjerg, project manager, You are not allowed to view links. He added that the contracts also allow the Danish transmissions company to improve its chances of concluding 'favourable contracts' in the years ahead as the company also plans to place large parts of the Danish overhead line network underground. The land contracts for the Kriegers Flak project are flexible, allowing You are not allowed to view links. The work will take place in cooperation with land owners whose land the cables will pass through, explained Hygebjerg.

The grid connection also comprises extensions of several onshore substations and two offshore substation platforms. These plants and components will be put to tender by You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login later in 2015.

The Kriegers Flak investment was approved by the Danish Minister for Climate, Energy and Building in December 2014. Wind energy is a cornerstone of Denmark's Green Energy plan to become fossil fuel free by 2050. As Denmark's largest offshore wind farm it will help to increase the country's wind power capacity to over 40%, capable of providing electricity to meet the demand of over 600,000 homes.
