Otto Steiner

Otto Steiner

1891 The birth of Kabel- und Gummifabrik Otto Steiner

Watchmaker Otto Steiner, the great-grandfather of the present managers, devoted himself to an intriguing new product: cables. On the site of the former "Pappelmühle" in Schwechat, he founded the "Kabel- und Gummifabrik Otto Steiner".

Heinrich Eger

1907 Takeover by Heinrich Eger

After the sudden death of Otto Steiner, his father-in-law Heinrich Eger took over the company.

Dr. Emil Kolben

Dr. Emil Kolben

1912 Schwechater Kabelwerke (SKW)

The business was converted into a private limited company (Ges.m.b.H.) and renamed to "Schwechater Kabelwerke". In addition to Heinrich Eger, the majority owner, Emil Kolben – one of the most important industrialists in Bohemia at that time – became a partner in the company.

Werksgründung in Prag
1919 Establishment of the factory in Prague

After the collapse of the Danube Monarchy and the resultant loss of SKW's most important markets, a subsidiary factory was opened in Prague together with Emil Kolben.

1921 Relocation of the factory to Hostivar

The subsidiary was relocated to Hostivar on the outskirts of Prague. Emil Kolben also became a partner in this factory, which marked the birth of "Prager Kabelfabrik Ges.m.b.H.", abbreviated to PRAKAB. The factory grew swiftly, with employee numbers increasing from the original 50 to 500 in the year 1940.

However, the company was expropriated during German occupation and nationalised at the end of World War II, so that PRAKAB was lost to its former owners.

1948 Resuming of production in Schwechat

Despite severe wartime damage, the Schwechat factory resumed production with 38 employees.

1951 Ing. Heinz Tremmel-Scheinost becomes general manager.

After the death of Heinrich Eger, Heinz Tremmel-Scheinost – the grandson of the company's founder and the father of the present managers – joined the company.

Until the final liberation of Austria in 1955, Schwechat was located in the Russian occupation zone and thus the company had great trouble maintaining its raw materials supply. Afterwards, however, its sales programme was swiftly expanded to include the production of underground cables.

1962 Extension

Despite considerable pressure, the company wisely decided not to join the newly revived Austrian cables cartel. This decision became the foundation for the company's subsequent dynamic development.

In the 1970s, two new production shops were built to increase the efficiency of the manufacturing processes.

Vertriebsbüro
1976 Extension of the sales department

The administrative facilities were extended for the first time, enabling the sales department to move from its city centre offices to the Schwechat site.

Hundert Jahre
1991 100 years SKW

Schwechater Kabelwerke celebrated its 100th anniversary. In response to political changes in Eastern Europe, the company began to seek contacts with cable manufacturers in this region. By coincidence, contact was also made with the management of the company once known as Prakab (at that time called "Kablo Hostivar").

Kablo Hostivar
1992 Akquisition of Kablo Hostivar

After tough negotiations, SKW acquired a majority shareholding in Kablo Hostivar. Subsequently, the company's name was changed back to PRAKAB.

1995 New management

Heinz Tremmel-Scheinost handed over the management of the group to Alexander and Christoph Tremmel-Scheinost.

Fokussierung
1997 Focusing

The continuing, dramatic structural crisis in the cable industry of western Europe forced the SKB-group to tighten its focus.

The production was moved from Schwechat to the Prague plant (in the process, the production capacity for energy cables was doubled) and the logistics capacity of SKW was significantly extended.

Expansion and modernisation

Kapazitätenausbau
2000 Expansion of capacity

The production capacity for signal cables at Prakab was significantly enlarged.

Modernisierung
2002 Investment and modernisation

The investment project for manufacturing high-quality safety cables was launched in Prague. A wave of modernisation began at the SKW site with the extension of warehouse space and the redesign of the rewinding concept.

The opening of the testing centre for safety cables enabled SKW to test the requirements for safety cables on its own premises.

Umsatzrekord
2004 Record turnover

Overall favourable business development resulted in an all-time record turnover of over 100 million euros throughout the entire group.

The "safety cables" development project was completed and the company received a number of testing certificates in Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic.

Neugründung
2005 New company established in the Slovak Republic

The segment of high-quality flexible industrial cables becomes a new development focus of the group. The manufacture of these products is thus concentrated in the production facility at the newly established company ICS Industrial Cables Slovakia s.r.o. based in the Western Slovak town of Nitra.

IKK Logo
2007 Regional expansion

The group acquires a majority interest in the Ukrainian cable producer Interkabel Kiev (IKK), which has been manufacturing energy cables in accordance with Ukrainian standards since 2005.  The dynamic home market and the increase in production capacities lead to a sharp rise in turnover at the plant.

SKB
2008 The new SKB-group

With Alexander and Christoph Tremmel-Scheinost concentrating on their management functions at SKB Industrieholding GmbH, the establishment of the SKB-group has been completed successfully. The group now generates a total turnover of over 260 million euros with more than 1000 employees and branches in 4 countries.
