Gemba – "The Real Place"

At the core of the 5G methodology is Gemba (or Genba). It refers to the actual location where value is created or the work is performed — not where assumptions are made.

Definition:
Gemba is the practice of going to the actual site (e.g., the shop floor, assembly line, server room) to observe, understand, and solve problems directly.

Why Gemba Matters:

• Builds clarity by removing assumptions
• Reveals real-time facts that are often invisible in reports
• Fosters direct communication with operators and staff
• Accelerates root cause identification and continuous improvement

Typical Applications:

• Manufacturing: Visit extrusion lines during a cable defect investigation
• Logistics: Observe packaging stations for handling delays
• Tech teams: Review server room configurations during downtime

Example:
Issue: Cable spools are arriving late at QA inspection.
Gemba Step: Supervisor visits dispatch dock → finds pallet mislabeling.
Insight: Labels didn't match the system batch – problem fixed at the source.
